Technologies like Amazon Alexa mean you can now control your devices with your voice, and drones like the $ 449 Yuneec Mantis Q come into this game. Unfortunately, voice control sounds like a trick that doesn’t add much. to the experience.

Technologies like Amazon Alexa mean you can control your devices with your voice, and drones like Yuneec Mantis Q for $ 449 between days. Unfortunately, Voice Command-Ensemble has a trick that doesn’t add much-select to the experience.

There are two extendable Wi-Fi antennas on the back of the controller as well as a USB Type-C connector and a USB Type-A connector to connect the smartphone to the controller. A USB Type A cable to a USB Type C cable is included to connect to Android phones. IPhones must use the Apple Lightning to USB cable provided.

Flight performance
The Mantis Q is an easy to fly drone. Open it, turn on the remote control, connect it to the phone, and then press the start button. Then the drone takes off and hovers about 5 feet above the ground.
In standard flight mode, the Mantis Q is very stable and perfect for beginners. A sport mode makes the drone much faster and more agile. Yuneec claims that the Mantis Q can reach 44.7 mph, but we measured it at 33 mph (a little slower).

In standard flight mode, the Mantis Q is very stable and perfect for beginners.
The Mantis Q offers a variety of flight modes, including travel (flight to and from you); POI (circle around a point of interest); and Visual tracking, which follows a selected object with the camera, keeps it at a fixed distance by moving the drone, or follows the object by keeping the drone stable and moving the camera. Visual tracking mode works well as long as the object is clear enough to follow.

For example, he could chase me gently, but I fought a dark meadow against a meadow. Since the Mantis Q does not have the collision detection function and long-range cameras with which drones like the Mavic Air avoid objects, the tracked object will lock directly into a tree if it hides.

Voice command
The Mantis Q voice control is interesting, but seems a little shy. The idea is fascinating. If you use the application and activate the voice command, you can tell the drone to take off by saying “Mantis Q, take off”. To avoid accidents, you must confirm it by saying “yes” when asked.

When the drone is in flight, you can take a selfie and say, “Take a selfie.” That’s good, but the remote app sometimes doesn’t recognize voice commands, especially when the drone is flying nearby. And you can’t use your voice to control the position or posture of the drone. Therefore, voice control is more like a gadget than a useful function.

Sometimes voice commands are not detected, especially when the Mantis Q is flying nearby.
The same goes for the “smile” function, which tries to recognize when you smile to take a photo. It works, but I’ve found that you have to smile broadly to activate the feature that makes you look like the joker. This may be useful if you are Batman, but it will not work for the rest of us who are not crime fighters.

Photo and video quality
The Mantis Q has a 4K camera. However, if you enable the electronic image stabilization function, the camera resolution will increase to a maximum of 1920 x 1080 pixels (1080p). However, you get a video at 60 frames per second.

The Mantis Q’s electronic image stabilization function is also less effective than the stabilizer used by drones like the Mavic Air 2. The video recorded by these drones has a higher resolution and is sharper and smoother. We also discovered that the stabilized Mantis Q video had the annoying habit of jumping.

When the drone was tilted to move left or right at high speed, the stabilized video maintained the level for a while. When the stabilization changed to reflect the orientation of the drone, it suddenly switched to the tilted view of a rather disoriented one. On the other hand, drones like Mavic Air and Mavic Pro physically tilt the camera to record the movements of the drones.

The Mantis Q has a 4K camera. However, if you enable the electronic image stabilization function, the camera resolution will drop to a maximum of 1080p.
The photos and videos are stored on a microSD card which is inserted into a slot on the left side of the Mantis Q case. The drone contains a 16 GB card.

Battery life
Yuneec claims that the 3000 mAh battery that connects to the back of the Mantis Q’s body has an autonomy of 33 minutes and this estimate is not far. We flew about 25 minutes before

sounded and continued for a few minutes before the application warned us that the drone would soon automatically return to the starting point. The Mantis Q comes with a single battery, but the included charger can hold three batteries and charge them one at a time. Replacement batteries cost around $ 60.

Conclusion
The Yuneec Mantis Q seems to be a missed opportunity. It’s a beautiful drone that is easy to fly and fast and takes very good 1080p videos. That may have been enough a few years ago, but competing drones like Mavic Air are shooting more stable and engaging 4K videos for only $ 200 more. Voice control on the Mantis Q is neat, but not helpful. As a result, it’s difficult to recommend the Mantis Q to drones with similar prices that offer more sophisticated features.
