DJI Mavic Pro Review

DJI Mavic Pro Review

With a sharp, stabilized, distortion-free 4K video camera, the DJI Mavic Pro is much more powerful than expected for $ 999 due to its size. It’s a great choice for pilots looking for a more portable drone.

DJI Mavic Pro: is it worth it?
The DJI Mavic Pro is a special drone for us. It was released in the fall of 2016 when we started covering drones in general on our sites. We often honor this compact and foldable drone for having changed the landscape of the consumer drone market, and today we keep this confirmation because we always fly this machine regularly for fun.

DJI Mavic Pro
The DJI Mavic Pro is a compact and foldable drone that has innovated in terms of portability. This quadcopter folds up and slips easily into a backpack or large bag, while 4K videos are recorded in the sky at a speed of over 60 km / h. The 3-axis stabilized gimbal provides very smooth images and OcuSync allows the transmission of long-range, HD live video. The Phantom line of drones made DJI a leader in the consumer drone market, but with the Mavic Pro, high-quality aerial photography was fun and easily accessible.

The DJI Mavic Pro is available in several packages. However, you can mainly buy the drone alone or in the Fly More suit, which includes additional batteries, a case, etc.

In the beginning, there were no other drones on the market that offered the same functions and the same quality of camera in such a portable design. In the official announcement, the Mavic Pro was presented in a water bottle bag. I often wear this drone in the large cargo pockets of my shorts.

Since then, many competitors have imitated the design and functionality, and DJI has introduced an update for the Mavic 2 drones. The question is whether the Mavic Pro is still worth it for 2019.

Introducing Mavic Pro
With a length of about 9 inches, the Mavic Pro has about the same width of use, but when folded, it is as narrow as 3.5 inches. The propellers fold and also fold very well to create a compact profile for transport.
Portability is a great selling point for the Mavic Pro, but the way the machine handles it in the air is part of the appeal. It is not fair to say that flying is easy, many drone manufacturers are struggling with the best points of the best flight characteristics. With the Mavic Pro, DJI has shown that they have succeeded.

Of course, the line of ghost drones offered stable flight, including an impressive hover, the Mavic Pro reduced it. Even better, the Mavic Pro was shipped at a lower price than the typical ghost drone, putting the flight of professional drone in the hands of more people.

Some difficult specifications: the Mavic Pro has enough battery to stay in the air for almost half an hour and can reach a little more than 60 km / h. The camera was one of the smallest on the market to offer 4K video. It is a 12MP, 1 / 2.3 inch sensor. The sensor size that is common with many drones today.

The solid specifications and shooting capabilities of the camera are enhanced by a fully stabilized 3-axis gimbal. You can control a large part of the camera angle manually. Some work automatically to keep the image flat while the drone is tilted. The gimbal tilts, rotates and rotates up and down, a little upward, by half a right angle to the sides and rotates 90 degrees to take portrait photos with landscape photos.

OcuSync changed the game. DJI had used LightBridge on larger drones, and many manufacturers used Wi-Fi and standard RC connectivity to connect the drone to the remote control. With OcuSync, the drone can have a remote connection of more than 8 km range. Not only for navigation controls, but also for broadcasting live HD video for one mile, 720p video up to those 5 miles.

The Mavic Pro remains an exceptional part of our drone collection. At least here it is the right place for testing, comparison and training. DJI started selling drones with better cameras a long time ago, but little progress has been made in terms of flight. I think that’s what we want to discuss today.

Is it worth it?
This question is very, very difficult to answer. Our instinct is simple, it’s worth buying the Mavic Pro, but what do you want from a drone?

If your goal is to get a great camera in the air, we can recommend many drones at higher prices, and a little cheaper, all with better cameras. If you are looking for an extremely portable machine, we can think of some that are smaller and lighter but offer similar flight capabilities.

DJI Mavic Mini
DJI made this decision even more difficult. The DJI Mavic Mini launched in November 2019 offers a very similar flight experience, very similar camera functions and a reduced price. If you take a small cable drone somewhere and want to take simple aerial photos for a nice day, it’s hard not to recommend the Mavic Mini at half the price of the Mavic Pro.

The DJI Mavic Pro is not the best drone on the market. Nevertheless, it remains an absolute favorite for many pilots.

With the Mavic Pro, you get a stable flight, excellent connectivity far beyond the line of sight, a powerful drone for smaller payloads and a perfectly suited 4K camera. You also have very good access to hundreds of compatible accessories for this drone.

First of all, you needed $ 999 to get the drone alone, $ 1299 to make the Fly More suit. Prices still fluctuate frequently, but are now $ 758 and $ 928. The truth is that there were floating offers, especially for Black Friday, that made the Fly More jumpsuit only cost $ 814.

Let me say with fluctuating prices, if I were to buy the DJI Mavic Pro today (again), I would be happy with the Fly More suit for up to $ 850.

For reference, you get the Mavic Air Fly More suit for around $ 850 and the Mavic 2 Zoom for $ 1229. Both drones have cameras superior to the original Mavic Pro, while the air in the air is slightly less powerful and the Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Pro are superior in almost all respects for $ 1449.

We want to know what you think. Is it worth buying the DJI Mavic Pro today?
